Overview

Providing public media to South Floridians over both radio and television airwaves, WLRN is a service of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and is home to NPR and PBS content for the tri-county area.

The stations approached The Factory Interactive with a variety of goals including updating their brand positioning, streamlining delivery of information to their audiences and making improvements to several operational areas including programming, community events, and fundraising / underwriting.

The Challenge

WLRN's organizational structure contains myriad stakeholders from station brass, to producers, on-air personalities, fundraisers, county officials and operational personnel.

Each group would prove to have their own ideas on how the stations should be positioned and which tools and information would be valuable for their online audiences. Producing a destination, which would appeal to both radio and television audiences while meeting the demands of the stations' stakeholders would be no easy task.


The Solution


Working in conjunction with the station's communications, on-air and fundraising / underwriting principles, The Factory Interactive developed an information architecture which would easily move audiences to their interests with ease. The stations' wide list of services would be compartmentalized into four pillars: Radio, Television, Education and Membership / Sponsorship. Each area of the site would be undergoing extensive reconstruction as new tools and expanded offerings would be created to support the needs of each vertical.

Several individual successes within the project helped propel the new WLRN property's adoption by the public. Comprehensive archives containing WLRN-produced programs like Topical Currents, Under the Sun and Arts Desk provide opportunities to catch or revisit favorite shows. Programming schedules for both radio stations and television channels also provide access to what's on now and augment live streams of 91.3 and XtraHD stations.

The WLRN Cultural Calendar is one of the most widely used and comprehensive event listings for the South Florida area. The calendar provides the public with access to adding their own events and includes local theater activities ported in from the stations' same-day theater ticket service Cultural Connection (also produced by The Factory Interactive).
